Please join the Manilatown Heritage Foundation as we pay homage to the Grand Nightclubs of Historic Manilatown with Dancing, Live Music, Poetry, Fashion and Refreshments every 3rd Sunday of the Month.
Benito Santiago‘s Beginning Ballroom & Latin Dance at 12Noon provides a safe, fun space for social dancers to learn and practice Ballroom and Latin dance basics, with or without a partner.
The fun continues at 2pm when we explore the rich musical, literary, fashion and cultural history of the San Francisco Bay Area with Carlos Zialcita as he proudly hosts the Jazz Meryenda Pop-up Jazz Club. Jazz Meryenda features its house band, the I-Hotel Jazztet, stylist Ofelia Navarro and culinary artists Carmen Choy and Danielle Bogni as they invite the community to celebrate a new decade each month. So come decked out in your favorite 1950s-inspired fashions this September 20th and help us bring history alive!
Last but certainly not least, this month’s Club Mandalay will be featuring a long awaited I-Hotel Center Book Signing. At 3pm Writer/Activist and MHF’s Resident Poet Tony Robles will read from and sign his latest book, Cool Don’t Live Here No More. As poet Jack Hirschman describes this important work, “In poems and vignettes, Tony Robles has written the generational memory of San Francisco at the point where alienation, deportations, and technological invasions are gutting its soul. This Filipino activist just won’t have it and neither will you after reading this superb book that restores the sense of a People’s City.”
Published by independent small press Ithuriel’s Spear, the book is a defiant affirmation of one man’s refusal to buckle under to capitalism.
